The European Union finds itself in a leading position on standardization efforts and addresses privacy issues.

Through “Directives”, the EU provides guidance for governments to implement in national law. Most telecommunication-directives are aimed at protecting the privacy of European citizens.

The EU is most notoriously known for its restrictive “Cookie”-directive, defining new rules for handling user-data in websites (EU Directive 2009/136, previously known as “E-privacy directive”).
